Study Tips

Study Tips.jpgChildren need good study skills in order to complete assignments successfully and gain the most from them academically. Below is a list of study skills middle school students should use as they prepare for high school.

1.  Setting a regular time to study that fits in with the student's family schedule

2.  Removing distractions (turning off the television and discouraging social phone calls during homework time)

3.  Gathering necessary supplies

4.  Recording assignments in an assignment book or on a calendar

5.  Note-taking; managing time

6. Organizing for a test.

Students need to review these study skills in middle school to be prepared for high school.

BCMS Active Parents!

Parents.jpg

At Bud Carson Middle School, we feel so fortunate to have such an active parent group. They serve the community on the Neighborhood Action Council. The NAC is currently focusing on recycling and the environment. This group of parents serves the school on our School Site Council and our ELAC. They also represent our school on the DLAC and the DAC. Our parent group volunteers for our after school art class twice a week in addition to attending all school functions. They also serve as chaperones on field trips. Some of our parents serve in these same capacities at our feeder school, Zela Davis School. It was with great pleasure that we honored our parent volunteers at a special school lunch on May 4th. We are so lucky to have a group of parents who are committed and truly see the value in being active participants at their children’s’ school.

Hustle For Huskies 2016

Bud Carson thanks all of the parents, students, staff, and community members who participated in our Hustle For Huskies! It was a great success and was only possible because of the hard work and generosity of our volunteers and sponsors!

District Spelling Bee!

On February 17th, the Hawthorne School District held its 10th Annual Spelling Bee for students in grades 4-6 at Hawthorne Middle School.  Twenty contestants representing seven elementary schools and three middle schools competed on stage in front of an audience comprised of friends, family, and HSD staff. The students who competed in the district spelling bee were all winners of their classroom spelling bees and also winners or runner-ups in their school spelling bees.

After five rounds, Daniel Avelar, a 6th grader at Bud Carson Middle School, won the competition. Daniel will go on to compete in the Los Angeles County Spelling Bee on March 30th.

Bud Carson Students Love Their Learning Garden

With the support of The Kitchen Community and the guidance of math/science teacher Mrs. Karina Clark, the Learning Garden is alive and thriving at Bud Carson Middle School!  For many of our students, this is their first opportunity to see vegetables, fruits, and herbs grow. The students who make up the Learning Garden team make collaborative decisions on how they want to divide their roles. They plant, harvest, water, and keep the garden clean. The latest harvest has allowed students to enjoy and learn about the benefits of broccoli, snap peas, a variety of tomatoes, radishes, and various herbs. Besides providing students with the opportunity to work as a team and learn about growing food, the Learning Garden teaches our students about responsibility. They take complete ownership of the garden and are proud of the impressive results of their efforts.

"I Like What You've Done with the Place!"

As students returned to school this fall, they noticed some things had changed.  Bud Carson Middle School received a lot of upgrades over the summer.  The new gym is finished, complete with the "Home of the Huskies" logo prominently displayed on the exterior.  The elevator logo was also updated.  The handrails of the two-story building received a fresh coat of paint, a Learning Garden was installed complete with pavers, planters, rock seating and shade sails, a second Project Lead the Way lab was also completed.  Luis, an eighth grade student told Principal Jordan on the first day of school, "I like what you've done with the place."  The next beautification project is a remodel of our cafeteria which is scheduled to be completed this winter.  Bud Carson Middle School is truly a place where students are proud to attend.
